Record-breaking participation at WOMEX
by Webmaster, 01.01.2010
Never before have so many Norwegian delegates joined the Norwegian stand at WOMEX. Nearly 40 people from the Norwegian traditional music scene made their mark on the event.
This year, the world music trade fair WOMEX had moved from Seville in Spain to Copenhagen and the Bella Centre in Denmark. This might be one of the reasons why nearly twice as many delegates than the previous year decided to take the trip. Another reason might be that the interest in and knowledge of Norwegian traditional music is increasing.
This view is shared also by Silje Førland Erdal, consultant and project manager at the Norwegian Traditional Music Agency, who experienced WOMEX for the first time this year.
- The demand for artists within the genre of folk / world has definitely increased, and we are noticing greater interest from the international scene than before. Compared with previous years, the Norwegian delegation is strengthened with several new players, which shows that there is much activity on the field, says Erdal.
Networking
The Norwegian Traditional Music Agency has been represented at the fair for several years, and Erdal finds it gratifying that more people prioritize this particular event.
- WOMEX is a place to both maintain and strengthen one’s industry network, continues Erdal.
This year the Nordic countries worked together to create a larger Nordic stand area. The result was a more intimate stand with more action than before. Especially during the Scandinavian brunch held on Friday, which was sponsored by among others the Norwegian Embassy in Copenhagen. Scandinavian specialties, both food and beverage, were served.
In the evening, Sami performer Johan Sara Jr. and traditional singer Unni Løvlid performed as a part of the concept Nordic Club.
