Business Development Program

Positive BDP feedback

by Webmaster, 05.10.2010

The feedback on Music Export Norway’s Business Development Program is in. Here’s the verdict.

In March / April 2010 15 Norwegian export companies took part in a comprehensive competence and network promotional program organized by Music Export Norway. The Business Development Program (BDP) aimed to strengthen and further professionalize the players, and help to better identify and exploit commercial opportunities internationally and with a special focus on Britain.

The new digital economy and the decline in sales of music in physical format have affected the structure and value chain in the music business dramatically. The changes have led to an increase of different business models and new revenue streams. The knowledge of UK and international markets, new trends and changes in industry dynamics is essential to effectively promote the careers of already established and future artists.

Networking and business

The BDP provided the participants with up-to-date market intelligence on how to break into the UK market that will help identify and facilitate the exploitation of (immediate, short, medium & long-term) business development opportunities. The program used a format that was as much about networking and business as it was about learning.

The seminar consisted of two modules: a 2-day course in Oslo and 4 days in London. More than 30 specialists from the UK and Europe were brought into the program. The Norwegian players primarily had a background from record and production companies and worked in various genres. Admission to the BDP was application-based and primarily aimed at the more established players.

Increased knowledge

This is the second BDP from Music Export Norway. The feedback from the participants has now been processed, and the feedback is very positive. Here are some of the results:

- On a scale from 1-5, how happy were you with your participation at the BDP (5=best)?

5: 56,3%

4: 43,8%

- To what degree did the BDP increase your knowledge of the British market?

To a very large degree: 12,5%

To a large degree: 62,5%

To some degree: 25%

- How interested are you in expanding the concept to different territories?

Very interested: 31,3%

Interested: 56,3%

Fairly interested: 12,5%

Not interested: 0%

Project Manager Jonas Vebner of Music Export Norway’s UK office is very satisfied with the positive response:

- The BDP has been one of our most popular and oversubscribed programs. That fact that so many of our top level industry professionals took the time out of their busy schedule to participate in this in-depth Business Development Program is a testament to their commitment to grow their international competence, network and explore innovative new business models. We look forward to taking this program template to new territories, says Vebner.

The project received financial support from the embassy in London. Module II was also partly held in Innovation Norway's London office and at the Norwegian Embassy. The project was produced with the assistance and in close collaboration with the International Music Manager’s Forum and the UK Music Manager’s Forum and Target Training.
