A week of Norwegian Jazz in London2008-11-18 The renowned London Jazz Festival presents eight days of Norwegian Jazz under the heading “Scene Norway.” During the London Jazz Festival, The Norwegian Embassy in London, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, BBC Radio 3 and Music Export Norway will invite festival participants to an eight day celebration of Norwegian music, movies, theater, dancing and literature. In other words Scene Norway, as the event is called, will be a mini-festival within the London Jazz Festival. The main focus, however, will be on the music. Jan Bang, Karl Seglem (image), Bugge Wesseltoft, Arve Henriksen and Mari Boine are among the established artists who will help make this a memorable event. In addition, the up-and-coming saxophone player Frøy Aagre will play two concerts, while percussionist Terje Isungset and singer Lena Nymark will present a unique performance with instruments made of ice. Newer acts such as Susanna and In the Country will also put their mark on Scene Norway. Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon will be present during the opening of the event, which will take place in the new creative centre Kings Place in London’s Kings Cross.
Unique arena
Music Export Norway will take advantage of this opportunity by inviting the most important key British persons related to jazz and similar musical areas to the Embassy reception and to the Norwegian concerts.
“It is important to use this unique arena to invite the industry and the press. They are the ones who ensure the long-term effects of such an event,” says Jonas Vebner, head of Music Export Norway’s U.K. office.
In addition to several exciting Norwegian concerts, there will be a panel discussion with participants such as Managing Director Inger Dirdal of Music Export Norway and Trond Giske, the Norwegian Minister of Culture.
Representatives from the Norwegian Society of Composers and Lyricists (NOPA) will take part in an event arranged by the Western Norway Film Commission to promote Norwegian film composers. MEN’s new Film Composers sampler will be distributed during this event.
A focus on Punkt Scene Norway culminates in a three day focus on the innovative Norwegian festival Punkt, set in Kristiansand in September. Punkt was founded in 2004 by sampling wizards Jan Bang and Erik Honoré, and has grown to become a recognized festival within the experimental music scene. Several international festivals have shown an interest in Punkt’s exciting line-up.
Scene Norway will take place in Kings Place through Saturday, November 22. For more information, follow this link. |
